It has the capability to run Linux operating system (OS) in it. This helps PS3 to function as a full-fledged computer with all standard applications like word, spreadsheet, presentations, and watching videos, web browsing, e-mail, chatting, etc, made possible. To install the OS is an issue. Some simple steps followed can install Linux on a PS3. Download from the PlayStation website download 'otheros.self' and save it. Download a Linux distribution like Ubuntu. Burn it to a CD, using CD burning software. Turn on the PS3 and in the Games OS Menu, select 'Settings' and in this 'System Settings' and then 'Format Utility'. Select 'Format Hard Disk' to allocate a partition for Linux. 'Allot 10GB for other OS', etc. In the computer, plug in the memory stick and create a directory by the name of PS3. Insert the memory stick to the PlayStation. Go to the settings menu, select 'system settings' and select 'install other OS'. Insert the Linux CD and restart. Do further installation procedure required.
